A group of armed men killed a policeman linked to the illegal drug trade, who had been AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave),and injured another cop and his son in an ambush at Yulo Street in Barangay 16, Bacolod City, at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police Officer 2 Federico Durana Nicolas, of Barangay Alangilan in Bacolod, who used to be assigned at the Bacolod City Police Office,succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and, was declared dead on arrival at the Corazon LocsinMontelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, a police report said.
Police Officer 1 Wilmer Bansag, 46, of Barangay Banago in Bacolod, and assigned at the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office, and his 17-year-old son April Ken,who sustained gunshot wounds,were rushed to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center.

Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon yesterday reiterated his call for the respect of the sacredness of human lives amid the recent spate of killings in the name of the drug war.
“I weep with the families of the victims of the latest spate of killings carried out in the name of drug war. I am one with them in their outrage and cry for justice,” Buzon said.

Ka Juanito Magbanua, spokesperson of the Apolinario Gatmaitan Command of NPA-Negros, claimed Friday that the 16 military actions carried out by the New People's Army in Negros Island, including the ambush of policemen in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, in the past six months, “demonstrate the NPA's increasing capability in launching armed struggle”.
In a statement dated Aug. 18, Magbanua also said they recovered 10 high-powered firearms, 15 short firearms, assorted ammunition and war materials.
