‘Speaker, Visayan bloc
for 1-Negros fed state'

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and the Visayan Bloc will support the push for Negros Occidental and Oriental to remain together under one federal state, Rep. Stephen Paduano (AbangLingkod) said yesterday.
All the Negros Island congressmen are backing the move and have the support of their colleagues from the Visayas, Paduano said.

The abolition of Negros Island Region will also have an effect on the Philippine Army in the aspect of “coordination” among local government officials in their campaign against communist rebels, according to a senior military official said.
With Negros as a region, you could always put together the two provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental. But this time, we have to deal with two regions, Maj. Gen. Jon Aying, 3rd Infantry Division commander, said, apparently referring to Regions 6 and 7.

A barangay captain in Guihulngan City, northern Negros Oriental, was shot dead by an unidentified suspect yesterday morning, while two of his companions were wounded, in Barangay Tinayunan, Guihulngan.
Police identified the fatality as Leudigario Gargoles Binera, 40, married, and the barangay captain of Hinakpan, Guihulngan City.
