House to review
NIR, SIDA budgets
BY CARLA GOMEZ

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez last night assured that the executive order creating the Negros Island Region is here to stay, but said the inclusion of a separate budget for it in the General Appropriations Act of 2017 will have to be studied.

Alvarez, who met with Negros Occidental and Bacolod City officials and private sector leaders at L'Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City, also assured that he would look into the shortfall of about P500 million in the 2017 national budget allocation for the sugar industry.

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District), who is the author of the Sugarcane Industry Development Act, said that while the law requires the annual allocation of P2 billion for the improvement of the industry, only P1.552 billion has been earmarked for it in the proposed 2017 national budget. moremoremore
