Kenny Rogers/Black Mamba survived a fourth quarter offensive by Chicken Deli 888 to post a squeaker victory, 96-95, and clinch the title in the ABC-ENCLAVES Cup at the Ayala Northpoint Clubhouse in Talisay City.
The Thursday night win came on the heels of its initial 96-86 victory on Monday in their best-of-three championship series.
The victory is a lot sweeter the second time as the Roasters became just the second team to clinch back-to-back championships in the Ayala Basketball Club tournament.
The first team to do so was Bar 21 back in 2014.
It did not come easy for Kenny Rogers as Chicken Deli came roaring back in the final 12 minutes after trailing by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Chicken Deli responded immediately in the final canto as Mark Carmona hit two triples in the first two minutes to cut the deficit down to 10 points with 10 minutes remaining.
As Chicken Deli was finally hitting its shots, Kenny Rogers suddenly went cold, missing most of their attempts from the perimeter.
It allowed Deli to chop more of that lead as Arjay Jamero and Dante Ma connected repeatedly to inch closer as the game got a bit more interesting midway through the rest of the final turn.
Carmona hit another three-pointer as the Deli cagers suddenly found themselves leading, 86-84, with four minutes left. Robby Jalandoon responded for the Roasters scoring 10 of his team's last 12 points as the lead switched three more times.
Chicken Deli had another chance to send the game into overtime, but it made only one of two free throws with a second remaining for Kenny Rogers to escape with the win.
Jalandoon, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, wound up with 33 points.
He got scoring support from Luigi Coo, Chac Mirano, and Snook Versoza who finished with 12 points each.
Errol Ledesma and Reygin Oquiana chipped in 6 apiece while Luigino Lacson, Bren Tajonera, Brian Puentevella, and Gerard Benedicto combined for 13 points for the Roasters.
Arjay Jamero paced Chicken Deli 888 with 24 points, Carmona scored 20 markers while Hans Schulze and Dante Ma made 15 and 13 points, respectively. Willy Dasal, Nikol Medina, Steven Villanueva, Adrian Cuaycong, Pepe Balladares, Biboy Cunada and Mark Jomalesa combined for 23 points.
Tournament Commissioner and Club President Gerard Benedicto expressed satisfaction that the tournament was competitive and yet everyone enjoyed the camaraderie among club members .
He thanked The Enclaves, the latest project of the Ayala Group in Talisay, for its major sponsorship of the tournament and for its generous contribution to the club.*
