‘Duterte should remember
butterfly metamorphosis'

Negros Occidental Vice Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson yesterday said President Rodrigo Duterte's tirade against US President Barack Obama was uncalled for and he hopes he remembers his promise that he will metamorphose into a butterfly.

In June, Duterte had said “ There will be a metamorphosis of the mind. From being a caterpillar, it will blossom into a butterfly”, in apparent reference to the way he spoke.

On Tuesday, the president expressed regret for a tirade against Obama in which he called the US leader a "son of a whore".

“While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret it came across as a personal attack on the US president," a statement released by Duterte said.

Obama pulled out of holding a bilateral meeting with Duterte Tuesday.

Duterte had warned he would not be lectured by Obama over concerns about his war on drugs.

“You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum," Duterte said to reporters when asked about his message for Obama.

“Obviously the president is “pikon (onion-skinned)”, that was a question from the media, there was no confirmed report about what Obama would be talking about,” Lacson said.

Lacson said he hopes Duterte has learned from the incident, noting that he already somewhat apologized for what he said.*CPG
