“Heaven Watch the Philippines”

Ninfa Leonardia Despite the sounds, the colors and fun of the ongoing Bacolod MassKara Festival, it seems we cannot take our minds off the happenings in the United States that is going to hold its presidential elections in less than three weeks. And if even our president seems to be bent on distancing our country from the U.S., most of us still consider it our friend and ally, that has sheltered and given opportunities to millions of our people all these years.

***

That is why, we take time out to watch the news from the U.S, especially their presidential campaign which, even if some say it is a fight between two evils, it is still clearly apparent which is the lesser. I stayed up late to watch third debate between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, and it was very enlightening, indeed. After that, I wonder who among the level-minded voters of that country will still have doubts about whom to choose.

***

For sure it was a great shock to hear the Republican bet, Donald Trump, already whining that the campaign, and the coming polls are, and will be, rigged. And to prove he was not joking, even without presenting any proof, he declared that he will not accept the results of the voting if he does not win! A commentator said that never in the history of more than 150 elections held by that country has any candidate ever said such a thing or had that mindset.

***

Why did he ever go into the campaign if he cannot face the reality of either losing or winning? Is he trying to scare American voters with that kind of tactic? I am sure many were turned off further by such statements, and his ranking in the polls may go even lower than it already is. Maybe he has one of the Marcoses for adviser? Look at Bongbong – he still cannot face up to the fact that he lost to Leni Robredo. And is it true that in China, Duterte even said that Bongbong could still be the president if something happens to him? Hasn't he accepted that Leni Robredo is the duty-elected vice president now? If I had any doubts about him before, they surely are gone now.

Do you know how Indonesia punishes pedophiles in their country? They do it with “chemical castration”. Now, one wonders how that is performed. Although I don't say those guilty don't deserve it, what is the procedure? Are those guilty of molesting minors penalized by the amputation of their instrument, or is there a medication that will just remove their urges to attack young people? Some Indonesians seem to protest against it, but their president, Joko Widodo, has defended the practice.

***

I guess Widodo was really shocked over the incident where a young schoolgirl was raped and killed by an alleged pedophile. Indeed, that is a terrible crime, for an adult male who would attack little girls n that manner. But we have heard of similar crimes happening in our country. So far, though, I have not heard of any suspect having been convicted and made to pay for his dastardly deed. I don't know about others, but for me, I would think that, to a Pinoy, castration would be a fate worse than death. Anong say ng boys natin?

***

I heard that Filipinos in the United States, or Fil-Ams, of which there are millions now, are jittery over the situation where the United States could elect a president with the mentality of Donald Trump and the Philippines itself being headed by an American-bashing head of state. What is the alternative for them? Most are U.S. citizens already and are well employed, with their children also studying in American schools and imbued with American ideas and principles. While I sympathize with them, I would also tell them again and again, there's no place like home.

***

As if all those unprovoked tirades against the United States, the European Union and even the United Nations, were not enough, our President has gone again – virtually cosying up to the two countries that most Filipinos are wary about. In one of his talks while in China, he referred to the three of them – the Philippines, China and Russia – as “Three against the World”! Since when did this begin, and do our people have no say about this? Maybe we should start singing again “Heaven Watch the Philippines”!*
