Seaman, companion drown
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

They were trying to save their drowning companion, but their efforts ended with one of them also dying.

Seaman Mark Bryan Santestiban, 24, and his companion Jerson Castro, also 24, drowned Saturday at the Ubong Cave in Brgy. Bacuyangan, Hinobaan, Negros Occidental, Police Officer Darwin Piansay, town police investigator, said yesterday.

The two victims and John Cesar Caballero, 21, were having a get together at the Ubong Cave, when Castro later went for a swim and dived into the water, although they were aware of the bad weather and strong current, Piansay said.

Castro later shouted for help because of the strong current and big waves, he added.

Santestiban, a resident of Sitio Banag, Brgy. Cayhagan, Sipalay City, and Caballero, also dove into the water to help Castro. But they were not able to save him, and were later also rescued by fishermen, who happened to pass the area, Piansay said.

Unfortunately, Santestiban was declared dead on arrival at the Dr. Eleuterio Decena Memorial Hospital in Hinobaan, while Caballero survived.

The body of Castro was found at 7:40 a.m. yesterday by barangay residents.*GPB
