A well-executed full-court press in the final two minutes allowed the Capitol Boys to complete a come-from-behind win and snatch the title against frontrunner Antones Lines, 87-83, in the 2016 Basketball Unified Sports Group Inter-Color Tournament Friday night at JGC Gym at Goldenfields Commercial Complex in Bacolod City.
Trailing by 11 points in the third quarter at 49-60, the Cap Boys mounted a rally to cut the deficit to 5 points in the fourth quarter at 78-83 then sealed the win with a 9-0 windup to turn back the Transporters.
Bert Celis led the champion team with 33 points as Melvin Baclay added 23 including seven triples. Rex Bayer registered 17 markers as he effectively worked alongside Nene Sibaya, Ireneo Morales and Johann Belandres in the defense department during the homestretch.
Antones Lines started slow and trailed 8-18 early in the first quarter before settling for a 14-24 score going into the second canto.
Cap Boys' offense sputtered in the second quarter and barely hung on to a one-point lead, 35-34, at halftime.
The Antones Lines Transporters got their second win in the third quarter as Hermie Derwill, Kokoy Fuentebella and Garry Garcia anchored a 26-14 reversal to put the pressure on the Capitol Boys.
As the Transporters moved in to take control of the game in the final quarter, Cap Boys employed the full-court to press for the come-from-behind win, the same ploy that they used during the semi-finals against Judge Marketing.
Sibaya, Morales and Belandres combined for 10 points for the Cap Boys while Derwill topscored with 35 points for Antones Lines with Garcia adding 15 and Fuentebella with 14 points.
BUS Group adviser and league commissioner Bing Soyao awarded the cash prizes to the finalists and announced the plan of staging more tournaments for the BUS G Huskies.*
