More than 30 plant exhibitors and hobbyist from around the Philippines have joined the ongoing 2016 MassKara Plant and Garden Show at the Redemptorist Church Grounds in Bacolod City Negros Occidental.

The 10-day biennial exhibit that started on Oct. 14 headed by the Negros Occidental Orchid Society has different varieties of indoor and outdoor house plants, fruit trees, bamboos, palms and flower bearing plants on display, highlighting different varieties of orchid plants

NOOSI co-founder and board member Ma. Socorro Monfort said there are 38 exhibitors coming from Negros Occidental, Davao, Iloilo, Mindoro, Gen. Santos and Dumaguete City.

The exhibit also highlights three orchid gardens — Woodland, Asian and English — made by the members of NOOSI that displays Vanda, Dendrobium and Phalaenopsis Orchid types.

With the theme “Bringing Back our Native Flora,” Monfort said that this exhibit aims to impart more information about orchid plants, including their advocacy to make Waling-waling as the national flower of the Philippines.

She said this exhibit also marks the 28 th year that NOOSI has held the event, adding that this is also their way to help their members involved in the business of plant and orchid selling.

“Now that we know the origin and the story of the waling-waling orchid, we are trying to promote it as the national flower,” Monfort said, adding that “It's not easy, but we consider it already as the second national flower, next to the sampaguita.”*MLG
