Twinkling

OPINIONS

Maybe it's our destiny, too

Ninfa Leonardia A news item yesterday said that China is going to help the Philippines build rehabilitation centers for drug addicts. Dapat lang! Where have most of the illegal drugs that get into the country come from, anyway? By the way, we don't hear anything about China itself dealing with drug problems. Do they have a secret way of getting rid of it?

For sure their method could not be one that would lead a French newspaper to call their leader a “serial killer”. My, that was a hard one, and naturally all the President's men are falling all over the place in defending him. Are they going to file libel charges against the daily newspaper, “Liberation”? Imagine, as quoted by the Philippine Star, the front page story was headlined “Rodrigo Duterte, the serial killer president”. This is an interesting development that journalists all over the world must be watching.

Anyway, we should be resigned to what our people had chosen to do during the election. Although Duterte came in late, he managed to win over all the former frontrunners. So he is speaking the truth when he says that it is his destiny to become president. He also said he only aimed to become a judge, having been a prosecutor, but he ended up as president. It must also be our destiny to have to put up with him, if not for his policies, for his, er, “colorful language.”

So what if we are left with only China, Russia and South Korea as our President's friends? Call it the workings of destiny again. That, unless you have the guts of that actress and singer, Agot Isidro, who spoke out her mind on social media (and had several people agreeing with her). Don't be surprised if she turns up on the list of showbiz personalities under watch for you-know-what. Meanwhile, what do former sexy movie personalities do when they are no longer in demand? Some turn out like former sex bomb Rosanna Roces who admitted being a pimp for wealthy Bilibid inmates.

So perhaps her name won't be in that list of 30 members of the profession whose names are still being validated before the President announces them. Anyway, she only said she just brings women to the prisoners. Rosanna said illegal drugs are not part of her business there. But isn't she also committing another crime with her admission? Maybe pimping is just a minor crime, not covered by extra-judicial killing.

An Executive Order for a ban on smoking is expected to be signed within this month by the President. This time the ban seems to be all-inclusive, because it will cover all public places, be they indoors, outdoors, terminals and vehicles. Not even your own? But the news about it does not specify if the so-called “smoking areas” in eateries and shopes are included. The ban will also be nationwide.

It looks as if American presidential candidate Donald Trump is self-destructing, not only with his recent pronouncements, but even with his past mouthfuls that his opponents have been digging up against him. And the worst is that he has made enemies of the women by revealing how much he disrespects them. Well, he swears there is no way he will give up the fight, but with several partymates in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives withdrawing support from him, he is in a bad spot, indeed. Even his fellow Republicans can no longer stand his pronouncements and they should be glad they found out before November 8.

Meanwhile, I worry for Vice President Leni Robredo. As earnest and dedicated as she is to the job the President has condescended to assign her in the housing sector, I am afraid that she may soon be the object of jealousy and intrigues from the so-called “Dutertards” who must be getting uneasy at the way she is working. Soon she maybe the object of intrigues and backstabbing, from those who have the ear of the President. We can only hope, and pray for her to be able to accomplish what she plans to do to improve the lives of our poor, homeless people.*
