The 1st Piaya Network Broadcasting Corporation/ First Community Bank Inc. Negros Open Chess Championship 2016 will unfold tomorrow and will run until October 16 at SMX Convention Center Bacolod.
This year's competition is expected to draw participation from the top players in the country including Grand Master Eugene Torre and several International Masters.
Among those who will raise the banner of Negros Occidental in the tournament is International Master Sander Severino of Silay City.
Up for grabs is P50,000 cash prize for the champion, P30,000 for the second placer and P20,000 for the third placer. All top three winners will also receive trophies and medals while the fourth to 10 th placer will also receive cash prizes.
The tournament is bankrolled by Tony Aguirre, Hugo Villanueva and his brother Lawrence, president of FCBI Bank, who are former chess players and champions during their younger years.
The Negros Open Chess Championship is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and will be held in ccooperation with A & V Negros Chess Club Association Inc.*
