Paner: SRA will focus
on poverty alleviation
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Sugar Regulatory Administrator Anna Rosario Paner has pledged to be an advocate of the sugar industry, and not of any specific interests.

Ma. Regina Martin turned over the reins of the SRA to Paner at rites held at the SRA office in Quezon City office Friday.

In her speech, Paner said much has been written of the fact that her very recent stint in the private sector was with a milling company, and that maybe she will further only the interests of the mills.

“Lawyers, like myself, are primarily advocates. So I will say now that I will be an advocate of this industry and not of specific interests,” she assured. moremoremore

Ex-cop killed in La Castellana
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

A policeman, who had been dismissed from the service, was shot dead yesterday by two riding-in-tandem suspects at Caduhada Street in Brgy. Robles, La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

The victim was identified by Senior Inspector Jerry Nacion, La Castellana police chief, as former Police Officer 2 Abelardo Calderon. He succumbed to gunshot wounds in the head, Nacion said.

Initial investigations of the La Castellana police showed that Calderon, 48, was preparing his game fowls for a cockfight, when he was shot several times by a gunman wearing a bonnet, leather jacket and shorts. moremoremore

PHL troops fire artillery
against Islamic militants

Troops yesterday fired artillery at positions held by an Islamic militant faction in the southern Philippines as more soldiers deployed against the group, which staged a deadly bombing in President Rodrigo Duterte's home city.

Troops used 105 mm artillery to blast the positions of the Maute group in the nearly deserted town of Butig in the second day of fighting since the gunmen -- who claim allegiance to the Islamic State group -- occupied Butig's abandoned town hall.

Mortar bombs could be heard in the distance as an MG-520 helicopter gunship flew overhead, a reporter in the town said. .
