Renowned Filipino violinist Gilopez Kabayao, who has roots in Negros Occidental, and his wife, pianist Corazon Pineda Kabayao, yesterday were all praises for a Filipina blind singerwho has impressed the judges of French talent competition “La France a un Incroyable Talent”.
The Kabayaos described Katchry Jewel Golbin, 25, as very talented and intelligent.
Golbin, who is from Tapaz town in Capiz and also uses the name Alienette Coldfire, made French judge Helena Segara cry with her emotional rendition of the French version of “I Dreamed A Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables”, reports from France said.
France's Tele Star said Golbin learned the French language to understand the song La Vie en Rose by one of her idols, Edith Piaf.
Corazon Kabayao said Golbin speaks very good English and trained herself to speak French without having livedin France, and can now carry a conversation in that language.
Golbin had graduated from Central Philippine University with an AB English degree with honors, she said.
The Kabayaos had met Golbin while she was studying at CPU, and knew she would go places. Even with her disability, having gone blind after she was born, she has accomplished so much, she was amazing on “La France a un Incroyable Talent”, Mrs. Kabayao said.
Her singing is very natural, she had no formal training, butshe can sing anything from classical music, Kundimans to popular songs, and she also composes, Mrs. Kabayao said.
Mrs. Kabayao said she worked with Golbin when she was 18 to record Kundiman songs, concerned that they are oftentimes no longer sang properly. Mrs. Kabayao has also recorded piano accompaniments for Kundiman songs foruse in schools in an effort to try to ensure that the correct way of singing them from the tempo to interpretation is not lost in the future.
Among the photos of Golbin shown on French television, is one of her singing with Mrs. Kabayao accompanying her on the piano.
The Kabayao's daughter, Sicilienne Kabayao Paniza, said Golbin sent a video of her singing to the French show, that then sent a crew to Capiz to meet her and provided her fare to go to France.
Golbin is very bright and level headed, she can sing any genre and is abreast with what is going on in the world, Paniza said.
Golbin wrote on her Facebook page “A big thank you to all those who supported me in the beginning of this extraordinary adventure.I'm counting on your presence to accompany me at the next step. I need you to help me achieve this dream fantastic! Thanks to you, I saw a waking dream!! I love you.”*CPG
