Protest set in
Talisay vs. ‘poll fraud'

Supporters of defeated Talisay mayoral candidate Sheila Saratan and her Partido Bugsay are set to stage a unity thanksgiving march and people's indignation against alleged massive electoral fraud this afternoon, her ally, Ranie Azue, said yesterday.

Vice Mayor Neil Lizares (Independent) won as mayor of Talisay City with 28,440 against Saratan's 21,119, or a lead 7,321.

Samuel Siote (NUP) with 25,962 defeated CB Lacson (LP), who garnered 21,112 for vice mayor.

Azue said participants of their protest will march from the public plaza to the Rafael B. Lacson Memorial High School to rally as a “manifestation of the people's indignation against massive fraud.”

They are eyeing the filing of an election protest before the Comelec in Manila.

Talisay Election Officer Kathrina Trinio-Caña said it is their right to file a protest.

She noted that members of the Board of Election Inspectors she spoke to said Talisaynons who voted Monday did not complain that their votes were misread when they went over their voters receipts.

Complaints were not lodged until after the results came out, she noted.

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., an ally of Saratan, said he cannot say that there was cheating in the Talisay polls. Maybe, whether there was cheating or none, they should file a protest, to give them peace of mind. That is their choice, he added.*CPG
