Tornado slams
95 houses, 3 injured
BY CARLA GOMEZ

A tornado accompanied by heavy rain and hail slammed 95 houses and injured three persons in Barangay Magballo, Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental, at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco said yesterday.

The tornado damaged 85 houses affecting 408 persons and destroyed 10 other houses occupied by 48 persons, Kabankalan Social Welfare Officer Adelina Tomaro said.

Three elementary school classrooms, a school toilet and chapel were also damaged, she added.

Farmer Norbin Ampon, 36, his wife Elsie, 34, and daughter, Elvira, 12, were injured by falling galvanized roofing from their house that was made of light materials, Tomaro said.

The three have since been released from the hospital, she said.

Hernani Domingo, chairman of Purok 5 in Barangay Magballo, said strong dark whirling wind hit their barangay for about 30 minutes. It would look like it was leaving, then it would return, Domingo said.

The whirling wind was accompanied by a noise that sounded like a speeding vehicle, and heavy rain and hail as big as ice cubes, he added.

Food assistance, tarpaulins, plastic mats and blankets were sent to the victims, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office OIC, said yesterday.*CPG
