Negrenses recognized
at Nation Tour WV rites

Negrenses were among the organizations and individuals recognized at the Department of Science and Technology's Science Nation Tour-Western Visayas last week, DOST Negros Occidental Director Allan Francis Dara-ug said.

The provincial government of Negros Occidental was recognized as one of the outstanding partner local government units of DOST during the Sci-Night: S&T Stakeholders' Night held at the Diversion 21 Hotel in Iloilo City recently, Dara-ug said.

The Association of Negros Producers, Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation, Inc. and the Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative were awarded as outstanding non-government organization partners, and Herbanext Laboratories, Inc. as outstanding industry beneficiary.

Also awarded was DOST scholar Joe Val Alipin, who graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of St. La Salle and ranked third in the November 2011 Chemical Engineering Licensure exams.

The three-day Science Nation Tour in Region 6, was led by recently installed DOST Secretary Mario Montejo. The nationwide science tour included activities in regional capital cities, with the participation of the Philippine National Science High School system, Dara-ug said.

Five Negros Occidental-based DOST beneficiaries took part in the Tek-Tienda MSME Product Fair and PSHS Mini-Science Exhibits at the SM City Iloilo. Dara-ug said the Negrense firms showcased locally-produced products of the processing, packaging and branding of DOST-Neg. Occ.

The tour also featured two National Scientists Ramon Barba, who specializes in agriculture, and Angel Alcala, a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee from Negros Occidental specializing in biological science, in the science forum.

A highlight of the tour was the inauguration of the Iloilo Doppler Radar and Synoptic Station at Brgy. Hamungaya, Jaro with Montejo.

“Having our own Doppler Radar in Iloilo means Western Visayas does not have to depend on Cebu for live weather reports. The radar covers the whole region and can reach up to Palawan and Mindoro isalnds and part of Siquijor, Daraug said.*KBC
