DOST to put up
innovation centers

The Department of Science and Technology-Negros Island Region Regional Director Rowen Gelonga said the department will put up Food Innovation Centers, in all regions of the country.

The DOST has come up with the facility with certain equipment to develop new products, a government press release said yesterday.

Gelonga said food products in the country for the past few years have almost remained the same.

"With the establishment of the food innovation center we hope to come up with new products," he said.

For Western Visayas, the FIC is located in Guimaras, he said.

Four other FICs are found in regions 2,8,11 and 10.

Since the NIR was newly created, he projects it may take two years before an FIC can be established in the island.

One of the main concerns the department is focusing on food production is the enhancement of product packaging, the press release said.

Gelonga said this is not only for aesthetics to attract buyers but also to protect the product, lengthen product life and address consumer protection.*
