Silliman High marks centennial

More than a thousand Silliman High School alumni are expected to be back in Dumaguete City to participate in the 115th Silliman University Founder's Day celebration in August, a press release said.

A series of activities has been lined up for the SUHS centennial celebration, on the theme “Via Veritas Vita”.

Grace Sumalpong, SUHS Centennial Committee chair, said the 100th year of SUHS this year is based on the first diploma granted in 1916.

One of the highlights of the event is a gala dinner-for-a-cause on August 26 to raise funds for the SUHS Teachers Retirement Assistance Medical (Stream) fund.

Part of the proceeds of the gala dinner is intended for the Stream or SUHS teachers who need medical assistance who may avail of the funds aside from the EPCALM, programs committee chair Girlie Bernardez said.

Stream and the Erwin Cabanag Adult Leukemia Memorial Foundation are the beneficiaries of the funds that will be raised.

Another highlight of the celebration is called “ An August Rush” , which features a series of running events and a tree-planting activity for retired teachers and leukemia patients.

Brenda Boladola, principal of the SU Junior High School, said batch 1976 coordinated with the Department of Education-Negros Island Region for a Youth Environmental Congress on August 6 at the Silliman Gym.

“SUHS students with other high schoolers will have an opportunity to participate in the advocacy in the environmental preservation at the same time for physical fitness as we celebrate the High School Centennial with run,” Boladola said.

The congress will culminate with a fun run on August 13 and a fellowship among high schoolers in Metro Dumaguete as well as in the province.

Activities for the centennial celebration include an ultramarathon on August 20, book and art fair August 22 to 24, centennial fiesta Aug. 25, centennial forest tree planting Aug. 27, and sunrise service, Aug 28, the press release said.

To symbolize the 100 years of Silliman High, a 100-kilometer ultramarathon will be held Aug. 20, and is expected to be participated in by about 200 distance runners from all over the country and abroad.

Categories are 100K solo, 100K relay for two runners, 100K relay for four runners, and a virtual run for runners who wish to run any of the three categories outside Dumaguete, the press release added.*
