Boxing Palicte brothers
receive heroes' welcome

Boxing champions Aston and James Palicte were given a heroes' welcome in Bago City yesterday for their recent achievements inside the ring.

Aston, also known in the boxing circle as the “Mighty”, knocked out Vergilio Silvano in the 7th round of their June 24 fight for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific super flyweight in Taguig, Metro Manila while his younger brother James, brought home the country's lone gold medal from the 2016 China Open Boxing Tournament held in Guiyang, China.

Aston was a bemedalled fighter during his amateur days while James was a gold medalist in the Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championship.

They were given a hero's welcome during their homecoming in Bago yesterday led by Mayor Nicholas Yulo and Vice Mayor Ramon Torres.

The Palicte brothers will receive cash incentive from the city government, Mayor Yulo said.

Bago Executive Assistant for Sports Ignacio Denila said that the city government will continue to tap and harness potential boxing champions.

He added that Mayor Yulo is supportive of the city's sports development program, particularly in boxing.

Bago is also knowns as the boxing capital of the Philippines having been produced boxing greats such as the Velasco brothers Mansueto Jr. and Roel who won a silver and bronze medal respectively in the Olympics.*
