Pacquiao not letting go
of basketball team

Senator Manny Pacquiao opted to retire from his boxing career but he remains as head coach of the Mahindra Enforcers in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Mahindra's official lineup submitted to the PBA listed Pacquiao as head coach with Chris Gavia as interim coach. Pacquiao is also included in the players' roster.

With his duties as senator on top of his priority, Pacquiao yesterday said he will just be there to supervise the team. As a player, he said he will play depending on his schedule.

New Zealand eliminates Gilas

Gilas Pilipinas kissed their bid for Rio Games goodbye with an 80-89 loss to New Zealand in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila last night.

Up against taller opponents who hit their marks from the distance, the run and gun play of the Filipinos sputtered and fell short after four quarters of play.

The loss came the day after the Gilas squad yielded to France, 54-93, Tuesday night.

Ceres FC hires new coach

Ceres-La Salle FC signed up former Spanish player Risto Vidakovic Savic as the new head coach of the team starting in the second round of the UFL League Cup.

Club director Nicolas Golez said Savic was in Bacolod City two days ago and went back to Manila yesterday. Golez did not provide information on how Savic's entry to the team will affect the role of former coaches Ali Go and Frank Muescan in the team.

The team's management also remains silent on the status of goalkeepers Michael Casas and Eduard Sacapano after the team signed up Filipino-German Roland Muller, who also plays for the Azkals.
