President Rodrigo Duterte has declared Wednesday a national holiday in observance of the end of Ramadan fasting or Eid'l Fitr.
Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said that with the holiday declaration, the Negros Occidental Sangguniang Panlalawigan inaugural session set tomorrow will be postponed to July 13.
He said the SP committee chairmanships will be announced during the SP inaugural session.
Board Member Salvador Escalante said Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will deliver a state of the province address at the inaugural session.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said the holiday proclamation was issued by the president in the spirit of peace and harmony, which would allow the entire nation an opportunity to join the Filipino Muslims in the observance and celebration of this sacred Islamic tradition.
In 2002, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law Republic Act No. 9177 declaring the 10th month of the Islamic calendar a national holiday for the observance of Eid'l Fitr.
Based on the law, only the Office of the President can announce the final date for this religious holiday, upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos.*CPG
