4 die, 14 injured in accident

Four construction workers were killed while 14 were injured Saturday when the mini truck they were riding tried to overtake a motorcycle, hit an electric post before falling on its side at the Circumferential Road in Bacolod City, SPO1 Rene Sebala said yesterday.

Two of the fatalities were from Cebu province - Jerwin Dotosme of Borbon town and Rejie Vargas of Bogo town.

The two others were Armen Algabre of Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental and Lito Tuyogon of Bais City, Negros Oriental, said Sebala, who was the investigator on duty.

The driver, Rommel Labang, 24, of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, who suffered minor injuries was detained at the Bacolod City Police station 6 in Barangay Taculing after he was treated as an outpatient at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH), Sebala added.

However, no complaint had been filed against the driver as of yesterday.

The white Mazda R2 mini truck was registered under the name of Nitos Auto Supply of Subangdaku, Mandaue Cebu.

Sebala said Labang and his passengers worked for DK2 Construction and Consultancy Corp. and were heading to the City Mall construction site in Barangay Mandalangan, Bacolod, at about 8 a.m. from their barracks at Rosario Heights, Bacolod City.

Labang, the head of the construction team, overtook a motorcycle at the Circumferential Road in Barangay Taculing but ended up losing control of the vehicle.

The truck swerved directly to the other lane but the back portion of the vehicle hit a wooden electric post before it fell on its left side and slid down the road, Sebala said.

Some of the workers were thrown out of the truck and hit their heads on the cemented road.

Dotosme, Vargas, Algabre and Tuyogon were declared dead on arrival at the CLMMRH.

Thirteen others and Labang, were hurt.

Five of those injured from Cebu City were Jeff Canlas Sabana, 22; Mark Doreen Flores Bacaldo, 21; Anthony Biapnas Lampo-on, 23; Alex Araneta, 22; and Patrick Tabura.

Four from Negros Oriental were Dominador Flesar Gordoncillo, 42, of Bais City; and Mark Frances Asibis Baldado, 24; Leo Casco Cadalso, 25; and Donald Balasabas Cadalso, 19, all of Dumaguete City.

Two were from Bohol --Roberto Ocaba Aparella, 21 and Jameson Turtoga Pogoy, 22.

Also injured was Jemar Tabay Alejandro , 20, of Hinigaran town in Negros Occidental.

Only two of those injured remained at the hospital as of press time, Sebala added.*CPG
