In his message, Pope Francis said the 2016 Eucharistic congress “is a propitious occasion to rediscover the faith as a source of Grace that brings joy and hope in personal, familial and social life.

“We accept the mission to transform the world by giving the fullness of life which we ourselves have received and experienced, bringing hope, forgiveness, healing and love to those in need, especially the poor, the dispossessed and oppressed,” the Holy Father said.

An opening mass held at Fort San Pedro with Archbishop Charles Maung Cardinal Bo of Yangon officiating, Myanmar launched the congress, and museums in the old district of Parian were opened for the IEC 2016 Heritage Night.

The 51 st International Eucharistic Congress being held in in Cebu City is the second time the Philippines hosting the gathering, with the 33 rd IEC held in Manila as the first. The first Eucharistic Congress was held in Belgium 1881.

Theological symposia, featuring international speakers, witnesses and presiders, and other activities will be held throughout the congress.

Tomorrow, the choir from the University of San Agustin, Iloilo will perform a concert together with two choir groups from the Archdiocese of Cebu.

In the afternoon, a show, “Sacraments of Life”, will present the different contexts and graces that go with the different sacraments which the Church gives in relation to the different episodes in the life of the faithful.
