Negros solar power
set to stabilize grid

Former Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla, Liberal Party senatorial candidate, yesterday said the solar power of about 200 megawatts that Negros Occidental is expected to produce by March will add to the stability of the grid.

Petilla, who was campaigning in Negros Occidental, said that while the solar power to be produced will be an over supply as far as Negros Occidental is concerned, this is no problem as the province is connected to the Visayas and Luzon power grids.

The majority of this power will be used by Luzon, the peak demand of which is during the day time, he pointed out.

There is also a normally high supply of power during the summer, and the solar plants of Negros will compliment this need, he said. Petilla pointed out that the highest capacity of solar plants is in the summer.

Petills said when he was with the Department of Energy he granted permits for firms to supply 500 megawatts of solar power nationwide by March, with no extension.

This will spice up renewable energy in the country, he added.

He said the geothermal plants are good for Negros that has had no power plants except for a small geothermal facility.

Without any power producing facilities, Negros Occidental will have an electricity problem if it gets cut off from the grid, Petilla also said.*CPG
