A Grade 5 pupil was killed after a Mitsubishi Canter Truck loaded with construction materials ran over him in front of the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School at BS Aquino Drive in Barangay 3, Bacolod City, at about 4:30 a.m. yesterday.
Ian Paolo Santillan, 11, of Barangay Mandalagan in Bacolod, died on the spot, Senior Police Officer 1 Jun Garong, traffic investigator of the Bacolod Traffic Management Unit, said.
The mother of Santillan, whose name was not disclosed, who arrived at the area, suddenly felt ill and was brought to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Garong said.
Investigation showed that Santillan was crossing the street when he was hit by the truck with plate number FTE 991, driven by July Sombilla, 26, of Barangay 2 in Bacolod, Garong said. It was the rear left wheel of the truck that ran over him, Garong added.
Sombilla said he moved the truck forward as there was a jeepney in the opposite lane and did not expect Santillan to appear suddenly.
“I applied my brakes but it was too late,” Sombilla said.
He said he immediately jumped off the truck and ran to Police Station 2 in Barangay 5, in fear that he would be mobbed by bystanders and relatives of the victim.
The helper of Sombilla, he identified as Cristitoto, also surnamed Santillan also ran off.
Sombilla said he is apologizing to the family of the minor as he did not intend to do what had happened. He said he has been driving for six years and he also has a child.
He is now detained at the custodial facility of Station 2, Garong said.*SGG
