The elusive Frank Fernandez, a former priest-turned spokesperson of the National Democratic Front in Negros, who was rumored to be dead, is alive and well.

Contrary to reports that he was ailing and dying, Fernandez yesterday challenged Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., 81, to a marathon in the mountains going to their guerrilla camp.

Fernandez answered questions from the media in a clandestine press conference at a peace forum somewhere in southern Negros,which was also attended by his wife Cleofe Lagtapon and KaJuanito Magbanua of the New People's Army. moremoremore

SP okays STL in Bacolod

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod granted Southern Shores Gaming Corp. permission to operate Small Town Lottery in Bacolod City, during its regular session Wednesday.

Councilor Sonya Verdeflor said she and opposition Councilors Ana Marie Palermo, Claudio Puentevella and Wilson Gamboa Jr., were out of the session hall when the RONO was approved.

She said those who voted in favor were Councilors Caesar Distrito, Bart Orola,EmAng, Cindy Rojas, Elmer Sy and Dindo Ramos, while Councilors Cano Tan and RenecitoNovero abstained. moremoremore

39 dengue deaths,
5,287 cases in NegOr

Dengue cases in Negros Oriental have declined over the past weeks even though the number of deaths and recorded cases this year is more than double that of last year.

The latest report from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Center of the Department of Health-Negros Island Region released yesterday showed that 5,287 cases with 39 deaths were reported in Negros Oriental.

This is 151 percent higher compared to the same period last year, from January 1 to December 17, with 2,103 cases and 17 deaths, the report further showed...
