House inquiry set,
legal action readied

An inquiry by a House of Representatives committee into the use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) imported from China in softdrinks is expected to take place in January after the holidays, Rep. Rafael Leo Cueva (Neg. Occ., 2 nd District) said yesterday.

“China uses GMO corn that can cause cancer. Even the US does not use HFCS, they are dumping it on Mexico,” Francis de la Rama, national president of the Confederation of Sugar Producers Associations, earlier warned.

“Coca Cola and Pepsi are supposed to be our partners as far as the sugar industry is concerned. However coke admitted that they are using 80 percent HFCS and only 20 percent cane sugar,” he said, adding that this has been driving down the price of locally produced sugar. moremoremore
