As big waves lash 4 LGUs

A combination of strong winds, huge waves and high tide destroyed and damaged hundreds of houses and pumpboats along the shorelines of two cities and two towns in northern Negros Occidental from midnight to 3 a.m. Saturday.

Hit were the coastal areas ofManapla and EB Magalona towns, and Cadiz and Victorias cities, Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian, Negros Occidental Disaster Management Program Division head, said yesterday.

Initial figures showed 40 houses destroyed and 234 damaged, and 77 bancas destroyed and 174 damaged.

Vice President Leni Robredo Saturday called for a concerted campaign to economically empower women to free them from the shackles of domestic violence.

“When women believe in themselves, already, that is the start of empowerment,” she said at the closing of the Provincial Council of Women's 18 Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, and the awarding of the First Search for Best Barangay VAW Desks of Negros Occidental at the Bacolod Pavillon Hotel convention hall attended by about 400 people.

Robredo,who was visiting Bacolod for the first time after the elections, thanked thepeople of Negros Occidental and Bacolod for her huge win in the province and city in the May polls. moremoremore

There will be no break in the police campaign against illegal drugs in Negros Island, even during the Christmas holidays.

Chief Inspector Dianne Grace Catedral, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office 18, said yesterday that there will be no letup in their campaign against illegal drugs.
