Interior and Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueno yesterday said he has high hopes that the retention of the Negros Island Region will be approved by President Rodrigo Duterte, as it has the support of other Cabinet secretaries.

Sueno told the DAILY STAR the Cabinet was unable to take up the fate of the NIR at its meeting Monday that lasted until midnight because there were numerous matters taken up.

CHR team exhumes
body of girl believed beaten
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Medico legal experts from the Commission on Human Rights in Manila arrived yesterday in Dumaguete City to exhume the body of a 7-year-old girl, who died allegedly of a brain tumor last month, on suspicion she was allegedly mauled by her father.

Negros Oriental CHR special field investigator, Jess Cañete, said the team is led by medical legal expert, Dr. Ludivino Lagat, who was requested by the mother of the victim for an autopsy of her child.

The mother is hoping to find more evidence to support a criminal complaint against her husband, who retired from the Philippine Navy in 2014..
