The Philippine Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Workers' Union - Trade Union Congress of the Philippines has filed a petition for daily wage increases ranging from P86.87 to P101.34 for workers in the Negros Island Region.
The union is also calling for the creation of a NIR Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board to expedite deliberations on their petition for wage increases.
PACIWU-TUCP president Hernane Braza said they filed the petition at the Department of Labor and Employment office in Bacolod City.
They are hoping that their petition for a wage hike will also trigger the creation of a wage board for the NIR, Roland de la Cruz, PACIWU-TUCP executive vice president, said. RTWPB labor and management representatives need to be appointed by the president, he said.
The petition asks that the daily wage for commercial establishments employing more than 10 employees be P399.84 a day, or an increase of P101.34 from the current P298.50.
For plantations with more than 24 hectares, the petition asks that the daily wage be P357.11 a day or an increase of P90.61 from the current P266.50.
The petition also asks that workers on non-plantations and plantations with 24 hectares and below be paid a daily wage of P342.37 a day of an increase of P86.87 from the current P255.50.
The petition pointed out that the last wage increase granted for workers in Negros was P11.50 a day effective May 2, 2015, which has not addressed the needs of the workers.
The P11.50 cannot even pay for the transportation expenses of a worker, the petition pointed out.
The loss of the workers income with the depreciation of the peso, and the continued increase of the prices of prime commodities and basic services, has further parched the meager income of workers into a more depressed or oppressive one, the petition said.
The loss of the workers income has to be restored to give the workers justice, he added.
The PACIWU-TUCP said the amounts it is seeking are below what has been pronounced by President Rodrigo Duterte that all wages of workers in the country be nationalized and based on the Metro Manila rate.
The daily wage in Metro Manila is P464.
Pending the approval of the president's pronouncement, the PACIWU-TUCP said it is pushing for wage increases for the workers in the NIR.*CPG
