NOPSSCEA Season 36
opens Sept. 16

Members of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural, and Educational Association will converge at the STI-West Negros University Gym on Sept. 16 for the opening ceremony of NOPSSCEA Season 36.

Sports competition will start this weekend with athletics at the Pana-ad Stadium, while high school and elementary ball games will begin on Sept. 10. College ball games are scheduled in the second semester.

Under the leadership of NOPSSCEA president Ervie Gallespen of Riverside College, the sports committee this season will be handled by the STI-West Negros University with Dante Albao as tournament manager.

Basketball games will be played at the STI-WNU while the high school and elementary volleyball games are scheduled at the Covered Court of the Bacolod Tay Tung High School.

Venues for high school football and futsal are still being scouted due to unavailability and higher rental fees at traditional playing venues such as the University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

Meanwhile, winners in the NOPSSCEA sports competition this season are expected to represent Negros Occidental in the national finals of the Private Schools Sports Association (PRISAA) in Tuguegarao City on April 22-29, 2017.

It is not yet certain if the elementary and high school gold medalists will be competing in the Negros Occidental Provincial Meet under the banner of Area 8 since the Department of Education has yet to announce the schedule of the Negros Island Region provincial and regional competitions.

Romeo Sison, education program supervisor of DepEd Negros, said that the committee will meet on Sept. 6 to discuss the matter.

Earlier, Sison said that there was a proposal for both provinces to field their entries by division, with Negros Occidental divided into 9 divisions and Negros Oriental into 6.

During the 1 st NIRAA hosted by Negros Occidental in February this year, Negros Occidental dominated the competition with its athletes representing the bulk of the NIR delegation to the 2016 Palarong Pambansa held in Legazpi City.*NAB
