vs. drugs: Life a sacred gift

The Board of Trustees of Silliman University in Dumaguete City has issued a statement calling for justice in the light of recent events to crush the illegal drugs trade and criminality in the Philippines.

“In the past few months, our country has been torn in factions centered around the idea of justice that seems to be testing the limits and ideals of our democracy”, the statement, signed by Silliman president Ben Malayang III, showed.

A Call for Justice (A Statement of the Board of Trustees of Silliman University) was released this past weekend at the height of the university's 115th Founders' Day anniversary, which culminated Sunday.

Negros bishops highlight
importance of sports

Two of the four bishops in Negros Island strongly emphasized that it is necessary for priests to engage in sports for their physical and spiritual well being.

Bishop Julito Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete in Negros Oriental and Bishop Patricio Buzon of the Diocese of Bacolod in Negros Occidental graced the opening of the games in the 11th Negros-Siquijor Clergy Sports Fest yesterday.

Cortes described the sports fest as “a reminder that we need to take care of our bodies, too, if we are to be effective priests”. .

Int'l ocean
conservation expert visiting

A known personality for oceans conservation, Alexandra Cousteau, will visit Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental Friday, and will share her environmental expertise and influence to promote and protect the health of oceans, Danny Ocampo, campaign director of Oceana, said.

Cousteau is senior adviser of Oceana, an international non-government organization working “for the conservation and protection of our oceans and restoring the abundance of our fisheries resources,” he said.

She will deliver a talk on “Save the Oceans, Feed the World” on Friday at the Silliman University Multi-Media Audiovisual Amphitheater in Dumaguete City.
