Gibran Bocable scored 32 points as Dads Team 1 rallied from a 24-point deficit to pull off an 87-85 come-from-behind win against Batch 93-95 Rexidol in the nightcap of the opening of the 7th Msgr. John Liu and Msgr. John Su Basketball Friendship Cup Saturday at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center.
Bocablo's sizzling performance included the go ahead free throws with 31 seconds left that ensured the win for Dad's Team 1.
Facing a 43-67 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter , Dads launched a full court trapping press to rattle the alumni as the turnovers, poor free throw shooting, and hurried shots hounded Batch 93-95.
Backstopping Bocablo in the payoff quarter were Gerald Baldonado, who knocked down two triples, Eugene Tsai's rebounds and putbacks, Archie Bayquin's hustle and steals and the offense of JR Gapusan, who hit a triple to tie the game at 74 all.
The halfcourt offense of Rexidol was clicking in the first three quarters as they were hitting their inside and outside shots. But things slowly fell apart when two players fouled out and slotman Christian Castro had an injury with three minutes left in the game.
Depleted and with only five players to finish the game, the Alumni put up a gallant stand until the Dads overtook them with in the final 31 seconds of the game.
Gapusan added finished the game with 13 points, Tsai dropped 12, Rhijun Lapuos shot 9, and Archie Bayquin shot 8 points.
Teruel exploded for 38 points for Alumni Batch 93-95 and was the lone bright spot for the team in the fourth quarter as he delivered 14 points.
Castro produced 10 points forAlumni while Dennis Gamboa had 7 points, Jose Antonio Robello and Garret Tabanao with 6 points apiece and Tubby Villanueva with 4 points.
Meanwhile, defending champion Hamamoto Truck Sales/Ax Currency 2006-08 debuted with a 77-52 rout of Dads Team 2.
Brian Coo and Alvin Dionela delivered 22 each while Ronald Despi scored 10 for the Dads.
In the curtain raiser, Sean Wee shot 34 points and Michael Herdon tallied 19 as Masskara Chicken Inasal 2010-12 beat the Juniors Varsity team, 87-76. Ralph Baldonado led the Varsity team with 27 points.
Ten teams are seeing action in the tournament with the games on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.*
