The Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People's last night declared a seven-day unilateral ceasefire to celebrate the resumption of the formal peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front.

The 7-day ceasefire will take effect starting 12:01 a.m. Sunday and will last until 11:59 p.m. of August 27, a press release from the CPP-NPA said.

3 Negros biomass plants

MANILA -- The Philippines has attracted anew investments in renewable energy worth about Php 7.5 billion.

International Finance Corp. -- with support from the Canadian government and the Clean Technology Fund -- announced yesterday some USD 161-million investments in three biomass power plants of ThomasLloyd Group and Bronzeoak Philippines in the country.

The projects are in Manapla, San Carlos City, and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental with projected capacity of 70 megawatts of clean renewable energy. moremoremore

Ombudsman orders 9-month
suspension of VM, 2 officials

The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered the suspension for nine months of three officials of Tanjay City in Negros Oriental, among them the incumbent vice mayor, after they were found guilty of simple misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service.

The order, implemented by the Department of Interior and Local Government in Negros Oriental Wednesday, suspended former mayor and now vice mayor Lawrence Teves, Barangay Luka Captain Denver Bokingkito, and General Services officer Bogard Colina.

They are among the five officials of the Tanjay city government, who were accused by taxpayer Elise Jose Monroy of dishonesty and grave misconduct, in the implementation of the repair of covered canals in barangays 5 and 6, Tanjay City, worth P296,775, in 2012. .
