DAR denies guv's petition; Legal battle not over: PLO

Agrarian Reform Secretary Rafael Mariano yesterday again denied the application of the Negros Occidental provincial government for exclusion of its 147.2865-hectare property where its Negros First Ranch is located in barangays Sta. Rosa and Canlandog, Murcia, from land reform.

Mariano, who was in Bacolod Saturday, had vowed to enforce distributive justice in Negros which he called a “bastion of landlordism” with the largest balance of undistributed land under CARP at 101,000 hectares.

The Negros Occidental provincial government represented by Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. had filed a motion for partial reconsideration to the order of Agrarian Reform Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes on May 10 denying its application for exclusion of the Negros First Ranch property where the provincial government raises cattle and sheep. moremoremore

Some pensioners
get huge windfalls

Some Negros pensioners were surprised when windfalls of P50,000 on the average entered their bank accounts following the Social Security System pension adjustment release last June 23.

Contrary to rumors, the large sums were not caused by a glitch but were due to the release of a total of P7.21 billion in pension adjustments to over 154,000 qualified retirees nationwide after the agency completed its special project in the manual verification and reposting members' contribution for the period 1985-1989.

Janice Diaz, SSS-Western Visayas Division senior communication analyst, said the pension adjustments resulted from the initiative to examine the five-year lumped contributions of members that were affected by the system upgrade in the late 1980s. . moremoremore
