Libel complaints were filed yesterday against two persons for claiming that a shabu laboratory exists at Campuestohan Highland Resort in Talisay City owned by the family of Bacolod Councilor Cano Tan.

Tan, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Police Matters, Peace and Order, and Illegal Drugs, said more cases will be filed next week against other individuals who have maligned him and have falsely accused him of engaging in the illegal drug trade.

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Negros Island Region director Julius Navales said that, based on their records, the councilor has no involvement in any illegal activity, particularly prohibited drugs. moremoremore

40 years for wife's slay

A casual employee of the Department of Public Works and Highways was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment yesterday for stabbing his wife to death at their residence in Bacolod City on March 6, 2009.

Bacolod Regional Trial Court Branch 50 Judge Estefanio Libutan Jr. found Joemarie Celis Arroyo guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the crime of parricide and sentenced him to reclusion perpetua for the death of his wife, Romela Fregil Arroyo.

The court also ordered Joemarie to pay the heirs of his wife P75,000 in civil indemnity, P20,900 in actual damages, P75,000 as moral damages, P30,000 in exemplary damages, and P2,402,493 as compensation for loss of earning capacity and cost of suit. moremoremore

DOH: 2 Negros provinces
among dengue hotzones

Negros Oriental and Occidental are among the 21 provinces in the country listed as dengue hotzones by the Department of Health.

The others include Cebu, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Zambales, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Antique, Southern Leyte, Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Apayao, Benguet, and Metro Manila.

DOH spokesperson, Dr. Eric Tayag, said in a press briefing in Manila that a dengue alert zone is being declared if a barangay in a municipality/city or province recorded occurrences of dengue cases in four consecutive weeks..
