Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. has confirmed that he is joining the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan, his ally Board Member Salvador Escalante, said yesterday.
The governor confirmed that he is filing his PDP Laban membership application today, said Escalante, who is secretary general of the United Negros Alliance (UNegA) that the governor chairs.
Escalante and Hinobaan Mayor Ernesto Estrao and his town partymates filed their PDP Laban application forms last week.
Angel Verdeflor of UNeGa said he distributed PDP Laban application forms to 17 mayors, and those who will opt to join the PDP Laban are expected to bring their town and city partymates along with them.
He will divulge the names of those who submitted their applications today, Verdeflor said.
Yves Akol, PDP-Laban Negros Island Region secretary general, said he will be picking up the membership application forms at the Capitol in Bacolod at 9 a.m. today.
However, the UNeGa mayors who are also members of the National Unity Party may not join the PDP Laban since NUP already has an alliance with the ruling party, Escalante said.
He expects that more than 50 percent of the UNegA membership will join the PDP Laban.*CPG
