Security up as
Panaad fest starts
BY SHIELA GELERA

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday urged the public to join the 23 rd Panaad sa Negros Festival at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City, that opens today and will run until April 22.

It will be a bigger and better Panaad, the governor said.

The Bacolod City Police Office is on alert for the festival.

More than 50 policemen will be deployed to secure the areas outside of the Panaad Stadium, Chief Insp. Dianne Grace Catedral, BCPO public information officer, said.

The policemen will come from Police Station 7, the BCPO Mobile Patrol Group, and the Bacolod City Public Safety Company, Catedral said, adding that a huge influx of visitors is expected to come to Bacolod and join in the celebration.

Police assistance desks will also be established in strategic areas.

The BCPO Traffic Management Unit and the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office will assist commuters and drivers to proper parking areas, and also to prevent vehicular accidents that may result in traffic jams.

Aside from Station 7, other police stations should continue their patrol operations, while the adjacent stations in Barangay Mansilingan will conduct checkpoint operations in strategic areas leading to the Panaad Stadium, Catedral said.

The police are appealing to revellers not to bring large amount of cash or wear valuable jewelry to discourage would-be criminals.

The Panaad Tourism Agri Trade Fair and Exhibits at the LGU pavilions will open at 9 a.m. today.

Also opening are the organic and livestock fairs, and a garden show.

Senate President Franklin Drilon will be the keynote speaker at the opening rites of the festival at 4 p.m.

A motorcade will start at the Provincial Capitol at 3 p.m. and will pass through the main streets of Bacolod going to the Panaad Stadium where the opening program will be held.

The new Negros Occ. Tourism Brand will also be launched at the opening ceremonies and the 23 Lin-ay sang Negros candidates, representing their respective towns and cities, will be presented.

The Best of Festival Dance Competition will follow right after the opening program.

The traditional fireworks display and GMA Network's Kapuso Night, featuring Miguel Tanfelix and Bianca Umali , will cap the first day of the festival.*SGG
