Seven more gold medals were added yesterday to the collection of the Negros Island Region contingent to the 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Albay.
Five of the seven gold medals came from taekwondo as the elementary boys' team won in kyorugi 120 – 128 cm. and kyorugi over 152 – 160 cm., while the girls' team won in kyorugi 160 – 168 cm..The taekwondo team also won in secondary girls' finweight and light middleweight events.
The two other gold medals of NIR yesterday were delivered by the arnis trio of John Rebert Escleto, John Michael Escleto and Jhonnie Rey Pangcobilla, who topped the anyo double identical weapon event and the team espada y daga category.
More gold medals are within the reach of the Negros team as the elementary softball team advanced into the championship round today while the secondary squad booked a seat into the semifinals after getting away with a 2-1 win against Central Luzon yesterday.
The elementary softball team, a selection of players from Bacolod City and neighboring towns of Negros Occidental, beat former ally Western Visayas, 7-0 in the semifinals yesterday to advance into the gold medal round.
The Negrense girls will face Central Visayas, who beat Davao, 12-5 in the other semifinal match-up yesterday.
The elementary basketball team is also in the Final Four after beating Ilocos, 80-76 in the quarterfinals, while the elementary boys and girls' volleyball teams defeated their respective opponents yesterday to advance into the last eight of the competition.
The elementary girls spikers turned back Southern Tagalog yesterday, 25-14, 25-22, yesterday to top their bracket while the boys' squad prevailed over CARAGA, 25-16, 25-20, to secure a quartefinals' berth.
The high school girls' basketball team won over CARAGA, 71-64, in yesterday's quarterfinals match to advance into the semifinals against Southern Tagalog.*NAB
