Overflow participants
join nat'l hog confab 4 head

The 25 th National Hog Convention and Trade Exhibits, with more than 5,000 registered participants, opened at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City yesterday.

The three-day convention, participated in by 60 hog raisers organizations in the country, will highlight the latest technologies in the swine industry as well as the latest trends in pork production.

In his message read by his son and namesake Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon III, Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. thanked the Pork Producers Federation of the Phils. Inc., National Federation of Hog Farmers Inc. and organization under its wing for bringing the 25 th HogCon to Negros Occidental and for being one of the country's partners in economic growth and development.

Marañon said the province has also been achieving breakthroughs in pork production, as the the HogCon organizations had pushed the swine industry to greater heights.

In partnership with Neg. Occ. hog raisers, the provincial government pioneered in the animal genetic hybrid program currently implemented in 26 artificial insemination centers benefitting more than 7,000 Alliance of Hog Raisers in Neg. Occ. members, he said.

He also shared the prospects of the province for exporting pork meat to countries abroad after being acknowledged for producing high quality products. “This means, we are on the right track in securing food security in the province,” he said.

HogCon Chairman Chester Warren Tan encouraged the participants to join various seminars in the succeeding days, talk with the exhibitors and learn more about the latest technologies, and from each other in order to further improve the country's pork production.

“We are focusing not only in producing the best pork for our ‘kababayans' but also for the international market,” Tan said.

In his message, Department of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala also thanked ProPork and NFHFI to ensuring that safe pork meat is distributed to the consumers.

Through the Bureau of Animal Industry, the department will continue to improve its animal health programs, Alcala said in his message that was read by Undersecretary for Operations (Livestock) Jose Reaño.

Alcala also said DA will soon present the Hog Road Map indented for the swine sector to become a world class and sustainable industry.

Among those present at the opening ceremonies were Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, DA Assistant Sec. for Livestock Davinio Catbagan, ProPork President Edwin Chen, Chairman Eliseo Yu, NFHFI Chairman Vicente Mercado, Rosendo So of Abono Partylist and Cong. Rico Geron of AGAP Partylist, Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena and AHRANO President Cynthia De la Cruz.*KBC
