A crowd of more than 10,000 warmly greeted presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte and his vice presidential candidate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, at the Aquino Freedom Park in Dumaguete City Monday, after a rally at the Apolinario Quisay gymnasium in Siaton, Negros Oriental.
Duterte wooed Negrenses with his “coming from the heart speech,” in vernacular, unmindful of criticisms from the religious groups over the foul words he used in attacking corrupt public officials, and three of his rivals, Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Grace Poe, and Mar Roxas.
He said he is not asking for votes but is urging the crowd to examine who among the candidates really deserves to be placed in Macalañang.
He vowed to address criminality, corruption and illegal drugs during the first six months if he is elected president in May.
Duterte said the self-imposed deadline is for him to move faster so as not to waste time, which is not the usual thing done by politicians as soon as they are elected.
He said when he is president, he will order the police and other law enforcement units to run after drug addicts, pushers, users and suppliers, kidnap-for-ransom groups, and scalawag in public service, 24 hours each day. This statement was warmly received by the crowd that applauded and yelled as a sign of their approval.
Due to a tight schedule, Duterte failed to call on Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, and one of the most important activities for the day, which is a courtesy call on Bishop Julito Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete.
The caravan that was supposed to traverse Colon Street, and passed by the public market area and Real Street down to the Freedom Park was also cancelled because of the very tight schedule.
It was also during that time that the image of Mama Mary of Simala arrived in Dumaguete from Cebu, and a long motorcade passed by the Aquino Freedom Park up to the Cathedral church. Another schedule missed was an interview with the media.
A proclamation of local candidates under PDP-Laban took place before Duterte left for Manila on a chopper.*JG
