Local Government Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento said Saturday that Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. will be the first chairman of the Negros Island Development Council, while Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo will head the NIR Regional Peace and Order Council.
Sarmiento, who presided over the NIR Technical Working Group meeting at the Provincial Capitol in Bacolod City, said President Benigno Aquino will issue the official appointments of Marañon and Degamo to the two posts.
The drug problem has affected 369 of the 1,219 barangays in both provinces of Negros Occidental and Oriental, which now compose the Negros Island Region, reports of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency showed.
Shabu is also the preferred choice of drug users with 88.78 percent, compared to 8.86 percent using marijuana, and the big percentage of users are male and the unemployed.
PNP chief Ricardo Marquez has ordered Chief Supt. Conrado Capa, regional police director of Negros Island Region, to conduct a new threat assessment on how serious the drug problem is in the newly-created region.
