Guv: Unega declaring
free zone for senators

The United Negros Alliance is giving its members a free hand to choose the senatorial candidates they wish to support, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.

He said that while Unega members are solidly behind the presidential bid of Mar Roxas and his runningmate Leni Robredo of the Liberal Party, the senate race will be a free zone.

Marañon, who heads Unega, said that, while they are supporting Roxas and Robredo, they are not part of the LP and have no obligation to support its full senatorial slate.

Monico allies snub
special session

Did councilors allied with suspended Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella snub the 3 p.m. special session yesterday requested by acting Mayor Greg Gasataya to authorize acting City Administrator Goldwyn Nifras as co-signatory of checks issued by the city?

Only Councilors Em Ang, Caesar Distrito, Roberto Rojas and Archie Baribar showed up during the special session presided over by acting Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran yesterday that started at about 3:45 p.m. and was adjourned before 4 p.m.

Gasataya recalled that there was supposed to be an executive-legislative caucus Wednesday, but he was informed by Familiaran that this was cancelled at the last minute.moremoremore

Binay barnstorms NegOr

Vice President Jejomar Binay started yesterday his three-day tour of Negros Oriental to meet with supporters for the 2016 polls.

Binay, who is the standard bearer of the United Nationalist Alliance, said if he wins as president of the Philippines, there would be one person from Negros Oriental in his Cabinet, referring to former Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, a former congressman of the third district of Negros Oriental and former president of the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Binay first visited the Sacsac Elementary School in Bacong, where he was received by former mayor Rodrigo Alanano of Dauin town. A free noon meal program was also held.moremoremore
