IN DUMAGUETE
79th IB hit for ‘trumped up'
raps vs. militant leaders
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The Rachele Mae Palang Command in southeast Negros, the Philippine Army has claimed to be almost decimated, slammed the 79 th Infantry Battalion for filing what it calls “trumped up” murder charges against well-known leaders of progressive groups in Dumaguete City.

Rebel spokesperson, Ka Estrella Banagbanag, said in a statement he issued that the 79IB is clearly targeting the legal progressive mass movement that is at the forefront of the protests against the one-island, one region proposal of Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.

Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo opposes the concept, saying it needs further study.

Nat'l scientist to
keynote youth camp

National scientist, Dr. Angel Alcala, will keynote the Sea and Earth Advocates youth camp starting today until May 3 at Lake Balanan in Siaton town, Negros Oriental.

The activity aims to get more people involved in protecting the seas by increasing public awareness and stricter implementation of environmental laws, a press release from Silliman University in Dumaguete City said.

Participated in the camp are about 30 youth leaders from Leyte, Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Guimaras and Aklan. It is an initiative of the Save Philippine Seas and the US Embassy.
