National scientist, Dr. Angel Alcala, will keynote the Sea and Earth Advocates youth camp starting today until May 3 at Lake Balanan in Siaton town, Negros Oriental.
The activity aims to get more people involved in protecting the seas by increasing public awareness and stricter implementation of environmental laws, a press release from Silliman University in Dumaguete City said.
Participated in the camp are about 30 youth leaders from Leyte, Negros Oriental, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Guimaras and Aklan. It is an initiative of the Save Philippine Seas and the US Embassy.
Janet Estacion, acting director of the Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences, and SU Marine Biology graduates Jean Utzurrum and LikkoTiongson will also give lectures, the press release said.
SPS is an independent movement to protect and stop the abuse and destruction of the country's marine resources. It pushes for marine conservation by harnessing the power of social media, spreading awareness, and lobbying for the enforcement of environmental laws, the press release added.*
