in football final

The University of St. La Salle football team survived a nerve- wracking penalty shootout against the National University, 4-2, yesterday and will play against San Beda College today for the gold medal in the 19th Philippine University Games at the Central Philippine University Football Field in Iloilo City.

After beating NU 1-0 in Sunday’s quarterfinals, the La Salle-Ceres team topped their bracket but were pitted against NU in the semifinals after the latter posted the second best record among in the quarterfinals.

With USLS getting away with the win Sunday, NU came out fully prepared for the battle for the final seat yesterday and held the defending champion in a scoreless deadlock after the regulation and the extra time to force a penalty shootout.

St Benilde rules taekwondo

De La Salle-College of St. Benilde was crowned champion in men and women’s taekwondo to retained the twin titles the school won last year in the Philippine University Games.

The DLS-CSB men’s karatedo team finished with three gold and four bronze medals, while the women team collected 5 gold medals, a silver and a bronze to dominate the event.

Naga College Foundation men’s team settled for first runner up with two gold and two silver medals, while Lyceum of the Philippines University was at third place with one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Pacquiao 'crossing fingers'
for Mayweather next year

Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao said he hopes  to finally step in the ring with arch-rival Floyd Mayweather next year as he denied he was taking his upcoming opponent Chris Algieri lightly.

Pacquiao, mobbed by his supporters during a promotional trip to Hong Kong, said "I'm crossing my fingers" that the hotly anticipated Mayweather fight could happen in 2015.

"Hopefully that fight will happen by next year," he told reporters in Hong Kong.
