Top Negros Occidental and Bacolod officials are joining the inauguration of SM Bacolod’s P1.4 billion north wing expansion today, that will almost double the size of the mall, it’s manager George Jardiolin said yesterday.
There will be a mass at 8 a.m. and a blessing at 9 a.m. to also be attended by top SM executives. The expanded area will open to the public at 10 a.m., he said.
The expanded area will create more than 2,000 new jobs, May Castro, SM Bacolod public relations manager, said.
The new section of the mall will house the 4,000-seater SMX Convention Center, about 200 more retail stores for global and national brands, a bigger and better food court, a grand atrium and a cyberzone, she said.
The new section expands the mall’s gross area by 133,893 square meters, almost double the size of the original mall, Castro said.
The expansion is brought about by confidence in the economic stability of Bacolod City and the emerging growth of neighboring towns, she said.
The original part of the mall that cost P1.6 billion and opened on March 2007 has an area of 71,759 square meters, and currently employs about 3,000 people, she added.*CPG
