Nietes, Fuentes rematch tomorrow

World Boxing Organization reigning Junior Flyweight champion Donnie Nietes will defend his title in a rematch against Mexican Moises Fuentes tomorrow night in the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasig City.

Should Nietes prevail against Fuentes tomorrow, he will become the fourth Filipino boxer to clinch a lineal title that would affirm his status as the best fighter in his division.

It will also put to rest issues that were raised on the Negrense fighter’s punching power against Fuentes after their first encounter at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City March 2 last year ended in a draw with Nietes retaining his title.

Juan Ramon Guanzon, Games and Amusement Board chairman, said the draw decision in their previous fight is the barometer on how evenly matched the two boxers are.

Nietes, he said, is in good condition and his training in the US and the sparring sessions he had against top boxers has greatly improved his style.

Guanzon said he hopes Nietes will beat Fuentes this time to preserve his title and remain as one the longest reigning Filipino world boxing champion.*NAB
