Environment Month
activities set in Negros

The Negros Occidental provincial government has slated activities for this year’s environment month that started Thursday, Wilfred Peñalosa, head of the Provincial Environment Management Office, said yesterday.

Peñalosa said this year’s theme is “Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level” that was developed and released by the United Nations on Environment Program, and focuses on the adverse effects of climate change due to global warming.

He said global warming causes extreme weather events, including the increase in atmospheric temperatures, change and alterations to weather patterns, prolonged droughts, flooding and raising of sea-levels which has serious implications to small island states and low lying coastal zones.

The activities to be conducted for the environment month include the ride-and-run for a cause, a tree-planting activity on June 25, and adopt-a- barangay and clean-up drive, June 26.

A thanksgiving mass and a culmination program will be held on June 27.*APN

National Flag Days the commemoration of the 116TH Philippine Independence Day.

A resolution requesting all learning institutions, public and private schools, offices, agencies and instrumentalities of the government including the barangays, business establishments, private homes and major streets to display the Philippine flag from May 28 to June 30, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Tuesday.

The period has been declared as National Flag Days, for the commemoration of the 116TH Philippine Independence Day.

The resolution authored by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., said the City of Bacolod by law and tradition celebrates June 12 each year as Independence Day.

The Department of Interior and Local Government has issued Memorandum Circular No. 2014-55 requiring all local chief executives to coordinate with private sector and non-government/private organizations in conducting simultaneous flag-raising, wreath laying ceremonies and other activities such as display of Philippine flag and civic parade, it said.

The resolution said the days of the 28th of May (National Flag Day) and the 12th of June (Independence Day) are designated as flag days, during which all offices, agencies and instrumentalities of government, business establishments, institutions of learning and private homes are enjoined to display the flag.*CGS
