SP wants holiday on Oct. 21
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution requesting the Office of President Benigno Aquino lll to declare as special non-working holiday the 21st of October for the City of Bacolod in celebration of 2013 as the “Diamond Year of Bacolod,” was approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

The resolution authored by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, said it was on June 19, 1938 that President Manuel L. Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 326 passed by the first national assembly of the Philippines elevating the Municipality of Bacolod as a city.

The law creating Bacolod as a chartered city was signed by President Manuel Quezon on June 18, 1938, stated that it was to take effect immediately.

However, the resolution said, Bacolod was formally inaugurated as a chartered city on October 19, 1938 in an official and festive ceremony at the Bacolod City Public Plaza with President Quezon, who appointed Alfredo Montelibano Sr. as the first city mayor.

It said 2013 is thus a very significant year for Bacolod as she marks her 75th year as a city of the Republic of the Philippines.

The SP of Bacolod has unanimously declared 2013 as Diamond Year and encouraged all of Bacolod’s private sector associations and civic organizations to initiate programs and projects to mark and celebrate the 75th year of Bacolod as a City of the Republic of the Philippines, the resolution said.

Side by side the celebration of the Charter Anniversary on October 19 as stated in Republic Act No. 7724 is the world-renowned MassKara Festival of Bacolod which is now on its 34th year, it said.*CGS
